Mariona Barkus:

Mariona Barkus has been creating and exhibiting art for nearly thirty years with artwork in many collections including Yale University, UCLA, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Barkus’ unique quality is her feministic vision expressed through a humoristic lens: “…without humor there is no hope, a sense of comic absurdity of modern times permeates my work. I am a chronicler of our increasingly technocratic, materialistic, consumerist, symptom-ized, victim-ized, advertised, and “in denial” culture, with special focus on issues of gender and individual powerlessness.”

Mariona Barkus demonstrates that art and humor can be a powerful vehicle in directing attention to values and practices deeply impregnated in our culture. “Assorted Breasts” is a satirical provocation that questions our culture’s exploitation of the female body, treating breasts as a commodity separated from the person. With sharp irony, Barkus rebels against sexism and consumerism and provokes her audience to evaluate materialism and objectification of the woman’s body.
